Tastes Like Retriever
This three
song EP contains recordings made for the forthcoming FOX television
series The American Embassy. Retriever were asked to record two
covers and one of their own songs and perform them on the series. In
two days of marathon sessions, they learned, recorded and mixed the
songs, simultaneously coming up with an entirely new version of "Star"
from the one which had been getting some airplay in the New York area
the previous summer.
As before, sleep deprivation, alcohol and rural Welsh Faeries played
significant parts in what limped on to tape. Typically, their cover
of an Ash song ("Burn Baby Burn") was done in two takes at
the end of the first session--with the vocal track finished at about
7AM. Along the way, Idlewild (who were in the studio next door) lost
their bass player for a couple days and ended up hanging about and contributing
to the general lunacy. Another fine result, then...
These sessions were the first of the present Retriever line up and went
a long way to defining the sound and style of the band from then on.
