The Booth Variations

“It was just a total fluke,” says Michael Cerveris, explaining how he managed to win a Tony for portraying John Wilkes Booth in Assassins before doing the same character on video for his brother Todd’s multimedia production The Booth Variations. “Sondheim got to casting it before we got around to doing it,” pipes up Todd, who stars as J.W.’s more famous actor brother Edwin. “It’s inevitable that there’s a certain resonance in all sorts of areas in the play,” says Todd (pictured, left, with his brother). Have they ever collaborated before? Michael, the older, more press-savvy sibling, says no—“but for years we wanted to have a punk band called Fratricide.”

• 59E59 Theaters, 59 E. 59th St.; 212-279-4200. In previews 8/5 for an 8/8 opening.
