Michael in Rockfield Studios, Wales
"What began as a super-fast “let’s make an album in a week” project has ended up being a slightly larger endeavor. Thanks to their patience, endurance and a healthy amount of tea, Norman, Charlotte, Francis and I did manage to record 11 songs in 9 days in Teenage Fanclub’s studio in Glasgow, including a few days in Inverness finishing lyrics for 5 of the songs. It was long hours and little sleep (mostly on Norman’s floor) but it was really a fantastic time.

When I got home and began listening back to the unmixed stuff, I eventually realized that being able to say I'd made a record in a week was less important than making the best one I could. That has meant waiting for times and places to coincide - and being patient in the meantime. It's meant working on days off - 16 to18 hour at a stretch, leaving the studio long after the rooster in the yard has finished crowing. It's also meant I'm getting to work with terrific people in fantastic places.

The time with Nick doing overdubs and mixing in Rockfield has been some of the most fun I've ever had in the studio. And thanks to everyone's contributions, the songs are becoming more than I planned and exactly what I'd always imagined. In the midst of Hedwig madness, taking the train to Wales to work on something entirely my own is the best escape ever.

And then there are the farm animals.
